Billion-Dollar Investments Drive Industrial Expansion in North America
LNG Canada has reached a $23 billion final investment decision to expand its liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility in Kitimat, British Columbia. The Phase 2 expansion will double the site's annual capacity from 14 million to 28 million tons, adding two new LNG processing units, an extra storage tank, and an expanded loading berth. The project is expected to create 4,000 construction jobs at the Kitimat site and 2,100 additional jobs for the construction of five new compressor stations. LNG Canada President and CEO Chris Cooper emphasized the project's role in strengthening Canada's position as a trusted energy partner and supporting long-term prosperity.
Ultium Cells, a joint venture between LG Energy Solution and General Motors, plans to invest $1 billion to retool its battery cell manufacturing facility in Spring Hill, Tennessee. The investment will introduce production of prismatic lithium manganese-rich (LMR) battery cells, which offer 33% greater energy density than lithium iron phosphate cells at a comparable cost. GM Vice President of Battery and Sustainability Kurt Kelty highlighted the importance of this step in matching battery technology to customer needs and strengthening domestic battery manufacturing.
Caterpillar Inc. is set to build a $1 billion manufacturing facility in Sanford, North Carolina, to support its growing Cat Compact℠ business. The new facility will increase production capacity of compact truck loaders and telehandlers, which are used in construction, landscaping, agriculture, and material handling. Caterpillar Construction Industries Group President Rod Shurman noted that the investment aims to better serve the growing segment of customers and solve their toughest challenges.
