Reflection AI Unveils Beam Model to Challenge Chinese AI Dominance
Reflection AI, a startup backed by NVIDIA, is making waves in the AI landscape with its focus on developing open-weight frontier AI models. Founded by former Google DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou, the company aims to counter the dominance of Chinese AI labs, which primarily offer open-weight or open-source models. Reflection AI is part of the NVIDIA Nemotron Coalition, a global initiative that brings together open model builders and AI developers to advance frontier open models through shared research, expertise, data, and compute.
The company recently announced its latest model, Beam, which boasts 501 billion total parameters and is designed to outperform Chinese providers in inference efficiency. Beam is a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) model, an AI architecture that uses specialized sub-networks to enhance efficiency. According to Reflection AI, Beam activates at just 23 billion parameters per token, significantly lower than competitors like DeepSeek’s V4 Pro and Moonshot’s Kimi K3. The model is trained on 23.8 trillion tokens and is expected to deliver frontier-level coding and reasoning capabilities while consuming up to four times less compute during inference.
Reflection AI is collaborating with several key partners, including Dell, the US Department of Energy, and Shinsegae. These partnerships aim to bring open-weight, frontier-scale models into production, accelerate scientific research, and build sovereign AI clouds. The company is also in talks to raise $2.5 billion at a valuation of $25 billion, with investors including B Capital, Citi, CRV, Disruptive, DST, Eric Schmidt, Zoom Ventures, Lightspeed, NVIDIA, Sequoia, and 1789.
Misha Laskin, Co-Founder and CEO of Reflection AI, emphasizes the importance of openness and collaboration in technological progress. He believes that open models are 'Trojan horses for the infrastructure they bring with them,' including chips, software, and applications. The NVIDIA Nemotron Coalition, which includes Reflection AI, aims to champion transparency, collaboration, and sovereignty in AI development, ensuring that the future of AI is shaped with and built for the world.
