Biman Bangladesh Airlines Expands Fleet with Airbus and Boeing Aircraft
Biman Bangladesh Airlines is in discussions to acquire 10 Airbus aircraft as part of a strategic plan to expand its fleet and increase its market share in Bangladesh’s air travel industry. The proposed purchase includes four A350-900 wide-body aircraft and six A321neo narrow-body jets, according to Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat. The minister emphasized that the decision is aimed at building a sustainable mixed fleet and denied any geopolitical influence behind the aircraft purchases.
The latest move follows Biman’s recent agreement with Boeing to purchase 11 additional aircraft, including five Boeing 787-10 wide-body jets and six Boeing 737-8 MAX narrow-body planes. This agreement was signed on September 23 in New York under a provision allowing the airline to buy more planes at the same price as its April 30 deal, which initially included 14 Boeing aircraft.
With these latest agreements, Biman has now contracted to buy a total of 25 Boeing aircraft, comprising two B787-9s, 13 B787-10s, and 10 B737-8 MAX jets. The deliveries are scheduled to begin in November 2031 and continue through 2035, although the government has requested that at least one aircraft be delivered by 2027-28.
The airline’s expansion plans reflect its ambition to strengthen its position in the domestic and international air travel market while ensuring a diverse and efficient fleet composition.
