Biopharma Giants Flock to US Amid Tariffs and Rising Global Rivals
Biopharma companies are making significant investments in the US, bringing over $370 billion in investment stateside. According to EY's 'Biotech Beyond Borders Report', several major players including AstraZeneca, Roche, Eli Lilly and Company, Johnson & Johnson, and Bristol Myers Squibb are committing tens of billions of dollars in the US. However, none is pledging more than Merck, which has promised $70 billion in new capital investment and R&D spending. This includes recent announcements of manufacturing facilities in Virginia, Kansas, and Delaware, which will create 1,200 full-time jobs and support 15,000 construction jobs.
The report also highlights the growing importance of biotech hubs in Massachusetts and Northern California, which accounted for 288 non-debt financings combined. Additionally, China's ascendance as a major player in the biopharmaceutical industry is noted, with Chinese companies representing a genuine alternative to US and European biotech hubs for the first time.
Biotechnology Innovation Organization President and CEO John F. Crowley emphasized the importance of focusing on areas where the US can be more competitive, rather than trying to stop China's growth.
