Boeing 747 Pilot Reveals Secrets of Barrel Roll Simulator Maneuver
The Boeing 747, also known as the Jumbo Jet, was a game-changer in aviation history. Built by over 50,000 people at Boeing, it took just 16 months to complete the massive project in the late 1960s.
The plane's sheer size is staggering - its assembly plant in Everett, Washington, was the world's largest building by volume, spanning an area of 200 million cubic feet. The original 747 fuselage measured 225 feet long, with a tail as tall as a six-story building.
Mark Hilsen, a former Boeing 747 pilot, shared his expertise on how to barrel roll the Jumbo Jet in a simulator. According to him, it's a straightforward process: start at 280-300 knots, pitch up to 20° nose up, and apply full aileron control. As the bank angle reaches 60°, let the nose fall, and the plane will roll until inverted.
