Boeing 787 Diverts to Seattle After Passenger Dies Aboard United Flight
A medical emergency on board United Airlines Flight UA142 forced the Boeing 787-9 to divert to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) on September 29. The flight was operating from Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) to Denver International Airport (DEN). A 71-year-old passenger, later identified as Felmo M. Penola, died after a medical emergency occurred.
The King County Medical Examiner classified the death as natural and listed hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease as the cause. Medical personnel met the aircraft in Seattle, but despite efforts to assist the passenger, he was pronounced dead at the airport.
Flight tracking data shows that the Boeing 787-9 diverted to Seattle during the journey, where it landed before continuing to its original destination of Denver. The incident highlights the importance of suitable alternate airports on long-haul routes, particularly when a serious medical emergency occurs far from the scheduled destination.
