Boeing Agrees to Pay Sh11 Billion in Compensation for Ethiopian Airlines Crash

Thirty-two Kenyan families are set to receive Sh11 billion in compensation for their losses in the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines crash, bringing an end to a seven-year court battle. The payout follows a Non-Prosecution Agreement (NPA) between Boeing and the US Department of Justice (DoJ) last year.

The agreement required Boeing to provide another $444.5 million (Sh57.5 billion) to a crash-victims beneficiaries' fund, bringing the combined criminal-case victim funds to $944.5 million. The additional fund is to be divided equally among the 346 people killed in the two crashes, producing an average compensation of approximately $2.73 million per victim.

The families will receive Sh353.3 million each, on top of the earlier payment of Sh187.7 million. This brings the total payout for each victim to Sh540 million. The compensation process has been ongoing since 2021, with Boeing reaching settlements in multiple lawsuits brought by the families of victims who died in the crash.
