Boeing Discovers 737 MAX Software Flaw That Can Disable Automated Landing Guidance

Boeing has disclosed a previously undisclosed software defect on certain 737 MAX aircraft that can knock out automated navigation assistance during specific landing scenarios.

The flaw, which stems from a cockpit software update, can surface when pilots alter a preprogrammed flight path after executing a missed approach or go-around. In some circumstances, crews may lose access to automated vertical navigation and be forced to fly manually at low altitude without certain autopilot functions.

Boeing said the issue does not pose an immediate safety risk and that it notified operators of all 737 models last month.
