Boeing Engineers Reject Contract, Authorize Possible Strike
Boeing engineers and technical workers have rejected their company's proposed four-year labor contract. The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), representing 17,000 members, voted on the tentative agreement.
The rejection rate was high: 64% for engineers and 72% for technical workers. Boeing said it will now divert funds from a potential investment to prepare for a possible strike when the current contract expires on October 6th.
A work stoppage by SPEEA members would further delay Boeing's certification campaigns for its 737 Max 10 and 777-9 aircraft, which are already behind schedule. The union plans to survey its members to determine what it would take to secure approval for a four-year contract.
