Boeing Identifies Software Glitch in 737 MAX Aircraft

Boeing has identified a software issue on some of its 737 MAX aircraft that can cause problems with automated flight guidance after a missed landing. The condition arises when pilots execute a precision approach with autopilot engaged, then perform a go-around and change the programmed path for a subsequent approach.

The flight management computer may drop vertical navigation (VNAV) in this scenario, leaving the plane in a simpler pitch mode. Boeing has informed all 737 operators about the issue, telling them that it is not an immediate safety concern, but existing pilot procedures cover it.

As an interim step, the manufacturer has advised crews to reset the system after a missed approach. Boeing's engineers are working on a permanent software update to address the problem.
