Boeing Labor Deal Reduces Risk, But Key Risks Remain
Boeing has secured a tentative four-year contract with its engineering union, reducing near-term operational risk around jet certifications. The Pentagon has also expanded the KC-46 Pegasus Combat Capability contract ceiling to $19.1 billion, including Foreign Military Sales.
The new labor deal and increased defense sales optionality do not change the key risk that delays or quality issues could slow any earnings recovery from here. Investors still need to believe in a long repair job for Boeing's commercial division.
However, fresh data points indicate cargo operators are looking to up-gauge capacity on longer haul routes with Afcom's Letter of Intent for up to four 777-8F freighters. This ties directly to the wide body thesis and tests Boeing's ability to manage complex supply chains and turn interest in freight and long-haul demand into tangible cash flow.
