The U.S. Air Force has taken a significant step in its modernization efforts by declaring initial operating capability for the MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopter program earlier this year.

Boeing, the manufacturer of the aircraft, has secured an award for the first four full-rate production MH-139A Grey Wolves.

This milestone is seen as a validation of key readiness levels for the Grey Wolf and supports the service's fielding plans to secure vital national assets across the country's strategic missile fields, according to Kathleen Jolivette, vice president and general manager, Vertical Lift Programs, for Boeing Defense, Space & Security.

The contract brings the total number of MH-139As under contract to 42, with Boeing having delivered 27 aircraft to date.
