Boeing Secures FAA Clearance for Smallest 737 Max Variant
After nearly a decade of regulatory scrutiny and technical redesigns, Boeing has finally secured FAA clearance for its smallest 737 Max variant. The approval removes a major bottleneck for carriers, including Southwest Airlines.
The certification decision follows years of work to resolve complex technical issues and complete a detailed review of the aircraft's design and safety analyses. The FAA says it requires the Max 7 to include improvements tied to the Aircraft Certification, Safety, and Accountability Act and NTSB recommendations, including updates to flight-control software, the flightcrew alerting system, and a redesigned engine anti-ice system.
The certification comes after nearly a decade of delays for the smallest model in Boeing's best-selling aircraft family. Carriers had expected to fly the jet before the pandemic, but the process was extended by tighter oversight following the fatal 737 Max 8 crashes in 2018 and 2019.
