Boeing Stock Plummets on Renewed Scrutiny Over Safety Culture
Boeing's stock price plummeted by 3.2% on Thursday, wiping out approximately $5.6 billion in market capitalization. The decline was sparked by renewed scrutiny of the company's safety culture following the release of a new Netflix documentary, Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing.
The documentary features whistleblower claims that cost-cutting and concealment played a role in deadly safety lapses at Boeing. While these allegations are still unproven, they have raised concerns among investors about the company's ability to restore trust and ramp up production levels.
Regulatory data points suggest that production quality has been steady over the past eight months, with the FAA reporting no new defects in 737 MAX aircraft. However, the FAA did announce a new inspection directive on August 17, which could potentially add $40,035 to $160,140 per cycle for each of the 471 737 MAX aircraft registered in the United States.
Despite these concerns, analysts remain optimistic about Boeing's recovery prospects. Of 28 surveyed analysts, 23 rated the stock as Buy or Strong Buy, with a consensus price target averaging $274.69, representing a potential increase of 27.7% from Thursday's closing price.
