Boeing's 777X Airliner Wows with Flexible Wing and Folding Tips
The Boeing 777X has been making headlines for its impressive design and innovative features. One of its standout features is its long, slender composite wing, which can bend dramatically in gusty air. But what's behind this unique design?
According to Boeing, the flexible wing is a deliberate design choice aimed at reducing turbulence and improving fuel efficiency. The 777X's wing can flex upward by as much as 26 feet (7.9 meters), allowing it to work with turbulent air rather than against it.
The wing's flexibility also helps reduce drag and fatigue, making for a smoother ride and lower fuel consumption. In fact, Boeing claims that the flexible wing is designed to bend up to 150 percent of its maximum load in flight testing, far beyond what any actual flight would impose.
But there's another innovative feature on the 777X: folding wingtips. When taxiing to the gate, the outer few meters of each wing fold upward, shrinking the span from nearly 72 meters to around 65 meters. This allows the aircraft to use standard airport gates, a first for commercial airliners.
The folding tips are designed to lock down and confirm automatically once the aircraft slows below taxi speed. While this may seem unusual to passengers, it's actually a clever solution that saves airlines from having to rebuild their gates.
