Boeing's 777X Certification Faces Fresh Delays Due to Engine Issue
Boeing's long-delayed 777X jetliner faces yet another setback as critical certification milestones are expected to slip into early 2027, according to Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg. The company has been working on addressing technical engine issues, regulatory scrutiny, and looming labor unrest that have marred the program for months.
The latest holdup centers on the 777-9's extended-range twin-engine operations performance standards (ETOPS) authorization. ETOPS allows twin-engine jets to fly long-haul routes over oceans and remote regions while remaining within safe diversion distances in case of an engine failure. Boeing needs to secure ETOPS before it can deliver the aircraft.
The issue lies with the mid-seal durability of the GE9X engine, which is being developed by GE Aerospace specifically for the 777X. According to GE Aerospace CFO Rahul Ghai, the company has found that its mid-seal was not as durable as expected and needs to be replaced. A new, more robust design has been developed, but FAA certification of this component is still pending.
The protracted journey to certification has been affected by regulatory scrutiny following the high-profile crashes of the 737 Max in 2018 and 2019. Boeing's ability to deliver the 777X in 2027 remains uncertain due to these challenges, which also include labor unrest with the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) union.
