Boeing's 777X Certification Pushed Back Amid Engine Issue
Boeing's 777X certification is facing further delays due to an engine durability issue with GE, according to Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg. The company had previously aimed for certification this year but now expects it to push into next year.
The delay will affect the plane's ability to fly over oceans and far from airports, as it requires authorization under the FAA's ETOPS program.
Boeing is also working to increase its monthly MAX production rate, currently at 47 planes per month. However, Ortberg noted that the company's wing shop in Renton has not kept up with Boeing's rate increases, which could cause a snag for the next jump to 52 planes per month.
The delay is just one of several challenges facing Boeing's recovery after several tumultuous years, including two fatal 737 MAX crashes and the COVID-19 pandemic. Ortberg noted that the company has made progress on fixed-price contracts and expects no further major charges on the Air Force One program.
