Boeing's Culture of Cost-Cutting Over Safety Exposed in New Documentary

The documentary Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing, directed by Rory Kennedy, sheds light on the corporate culture of cost-cutting and production schedules at Boeing that compromised safety. The film centers on former quality manager John Barnett, who alleged serious manufacturing and safety problems before his death in 2024.

The documentary examines the two 737 MAX crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia that killed 346 people, as well as the near-catastrophic 2024 Alaska Airlines incident where a door plug blew out of a 737 MAX 9. Former employees, victims' families, and industry insiders argue that Boeing's problems were not just engineering failures but the result of a corporate culture prioritizing cost-cutting over safety.

The documentary reveals that scrap parts, including some 'basically rotted', were improperly returned to production during work on Dreamliners. Longtime Boeing quality manager Merle Meyers alleged that defective parts could disappear back into the manufacturing process at all.
