Google Maps Hacks for Long Road Trips
After completing an arduous journey of over 400 miles, I've learned which settings to enable in Google Maps for a smoother navigation experience. As someone who relies on the app as a navigation assistant on Android Auto or my smartphone, I've discovered several hidden features that make a significant difference during long drives.
One crucial setting is downloading offline maps ahead of time. This can be done by launching the Maps app, tapping your profile icon, and going to Offline maps > Select your own map. You can drag the rectangle over the area you want to save, which can span from a small spot to an entire province.
Another essential feature is turning on the traffic layer. This provides instant visual hints of congestion along your route, helping you anticipate potential bottlenecks and roadblocks. The live traffic overlay displays green lines for free-flowing movement, orange or yellow signals sluggish travel, and deep red highlights bumper-to-bumper traffic.
In addition to these settings, I also enable custom actions using Gemini actions. This utility allows me to build automated shortcuts that can be triggered hands-free using voice prompts. I mainly use it to switch media queues or launch direct routing toward a saved location.
