In 2018, Boeing sent its senior vice president to Rolls-Royce's UK facilities after repeated turbine blade failures on Trent 1000 engines caused widespread groundings of the 787. The problem arose from underpowered engines struggling to meet heavier airframes than originally planned.
The mismatch in weight assumptions during design led to premature wear on the engines, which couldn't handle the increased load. Although upgrades like the TEN variant were introduced, they didn't fully resolve the issue.
Airline operators faced costly delays and fleet disruptions for years due to the engine crisis. Eventually, Rolls-Royce redesigned core components to address the problem.
Today, only 8% of new 787 orders select RR powerplants, indicating lasting reputational damage and operational caution among carriers.
