Boeing's Starliner Capsule Gets New Lease on Life with NASA Support
NASA is providing additional support and funding to Boeing's Starliner capsule after two test pilots were stuck at the International Space Station for nearly a year due to the spacecraft's technical issues.
The Starliner capsule had numerous problems in 2024, prompting NASA to reclassify the botched mission as a 'Type A mishap', its most severe ranking.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman announced that Boeing should be ready to launch a new and improved Starliner to the space station by December, carrying cargo but no crew. Astronauts will not strap in until 2028 due to ongoing safety redesigns.
The upgrades and certifications are expected to cost NASA an additional $359 million, according to Manager Dana Weigel. Among the fixes are new valves and seals.
