Broadcom's $100 Billion Bet on AI Sparks Market Unease
Broadcom's stock price has been experiencing volatility due to concerns over its proposed debt package and AI financing ambitions. The company is seeking a senior secured tranche of $45 billion and a junior tranche of around $35 billion as part of a larger $70-$80 billion financing round, with some reports suggesting the total could reach up to $100 billion.
The purpose of this borrowing is to fund compute capacity for Anthropic and other AI enterprises, positioning Broadcom as a key infrastructure backbone in the AI buildout. However, this comes at the cost of significant balance-sheet leverage, which has investors on edge.
On August 14, Bank of America downgraded Broadcom's issuer and bond ratings from Overweight to Marketweight due to uncertainty surrounding the XPV platform and its associated AI financing structure.
The stock fell after the downgrade, but a subsequent partnership with Apple through 2031, valued at over $30 billion, provided some stability. This deal secures a cornerstone smartphone customer for Broadcom and offers revenue visibility that stands apart from the volatility of the AI segment.
