Burger King Eats Away at McDonald's Market Share
McDonald's is facing stiff competition from Burger King as it struggles to execute its turnaround strategy. In the second quarter of 2026, Burger King reported a significant increase in same-store sales in the U.S., with an 8.5% rise, outperforming McDonald's 0.8% growth.
Burger King is implementing a turnaround strategy similar to McDonald's, focusing on remodeling existing stores and promoting its best-selling sandwich, the Whopper. Restaurant Brands International (NYSE: QSR) reported a more than 12% climb in earnings per share in the second quarter of 2026, driven by Burger King's success.
McDonald's, on the other hand, has been struggling to execute effectively, with restaurants attributing poor performance to too many new rollouts. The company is hoping its McDonald's > NEXT initiative will help turn things around, but some experts question whether this strategy is the right one.
