Canada Probes Fake Labels on Imported Food Products
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is investigating potential risks to Canada's imports after an Indian operation was raided for labeling food products with fake information. The raid, which took place last week in a Mumbai warehouse, seized $80,000 worth of products and chemicals used to alter expiration dates and nutrition labels.
Among the products found were PepsiCo's Kurkure puffed chips, Nestle, Coca-Cola, and Unilever goods. A packet of Kurkure chips had a fake label with nutrition information in both English and French, similar to Canada's labeling requirements.
The CFIA stated it is monitoring the situation but has no information indicating that products associated with this operation entered Canada. However, it takes food fraud seriously and will take action if non-compliant foods are identified.
