CAT Stock Valuation Not Far-Fetched Amid Growing Earnings Opportunity
Caterpillar's valuation may be high, but its earnings opportunity has become broader and more visible. The company's backlog increased by 92% year-over-year in Q2, with a record $72 billion in orders. CEO Joe Creed said that strong order rates and growing backlog reflect broadening momentum across all three of their primary segments.
Caterpillar's infrastructure demand now spans several cycles, including AI data centers, power generation, and electrification needs. The company sells construction equipment, engines, turbines, and generators to meet these demands. Power & Energy sales rose 17% to $8.2 billion in Q2, with power generation sales increasing by 29%. Caterpillar expects power generation sales to triple by 2030 from 2024 levels.
The company's AI and services can reduce cyclicality from the inside. Its expanded partnership with Nvidia brings AI computing into machines and factories, aiming for autonomous construction fleets and smarter in-cab tools. Caterpillar has also demonstrated its first autonomous soil compactor, moving beyond giant mining sites.
