Caterpillar Posts Record $20B Quarter Amid Robust Demand
Caterpillar Inc., a leading heavy equipment manufacturer, has announced its first-ever $20 billion quarter in Q2 2026. The company's sales and revenues jumped 24% year-over-year to $20.5 billion, exceeding Wall Street expectations. Adjusted profit per share surged 73% to $8.17, while adjusted operating profit margin expanded by 430 basis points to 21.9%. The Power & Energy segment led the charge, with power generation sales soaring 72% and profit rising 30%.
CEO Joe Creed attributed the strong performance to constant discussions with customers, who are demanding more units due to robust demand for data center power. He noted that no one is slowing down at the moment, with orders extending into late 2028 for gas prime engines and turbines going as far out as 2030. The company has restarted production of its 10-megawatt medium-speed gas reciprocating engine platform, which was mothballed in 2022.
Caterpillar's backlog grew by $9 billion sequentially to a record $72 billion, with all three primary segments contributing. The company now expects tariff costs of approximately $2.2 billion excluding IEEPA recoveries, at the low end of its prior range. Management raised full-year 2026 sales and revenues growth outlook to mid-to-high teens, supported by healthy demand across all three primary segments.
