Caterpillar Pours $1 Billion into North Carolina Expansion
Caterpillar Inc., a global leader in heavy machinery and equipment manufacturing, is embarking on a significant expansion project. The company has announced plans to invest approximately $1 billion in its Sanford, N.C., manufacturing facility. This investment aims to increase production capacity for compact track loaders and telehandlers, key products within Caterpillar's Cat Compact business.
The announcement highlights the growing demand for compact equipment, with Rod Shurman, Caterpillar Construction Industries Group President, stating that the company is 'investing to better serve this growing segment of customers.' The expansion will create a modern, technology-enabled manufacturing environment, incorporating advanced technologies such as automation, digital production systems, and integrated logistics capabilities.
The project's selection of North Carolina was based on the state's existing presence in the region, the local workforce's strength, and the opportunity to build upon existing manufacturing expertise. Local officials have approved incentives worth up to $85.5 million to support the expansion. While no additional jobs were announced, the project is expected to create opportunities for advanced manufacturing careers.
