Caterpillar Unveils Tech Advances for Safer, More Efficient Construction Sites
Caterpillar is showcasing its latest technological advancements in construction and mining equipment to improve job site safety, efficiency, and productivity. At an event at the Edwards Demonstration and Learning Center, the company's Chief Technology Officer, Jaime Mineart, highlighted some of the new features that cater to customer needs.
Mineart stated that the company is bringing technologies similar to those found in everyday consumer vehicles into its equipment. These include collision mitigation systems that can stop a machine if it detects a hazard and prevent movement when there's an obstacle nearby.
The construction industry has one of the highest fatality rates, accounting for 5% of North America's workforce but 20% of job site fatalities. Caterpillar is working hard to integrate technologies that prevent such incidents. Mineart mentioned that customers repeatedly ask for safer equipment and solutions to labor shortages, in addition to increased productivity.
Caterpillar is also exploring remote operation capabilities, allowing a single operator to manage multiple machines at once. This can significantly reduce unproductive time on the job site, which currently stands at 40%. Mineart emphasized that technology should be adaptable and user-friendly, with an AI assistant in the cab of the machine to aid operators.
