CFOs Take Center Stage as AI Integration Accelerates
A new study from IBM's Institute for Business Value has found that as artificial intelligence becomes more integrated into enterprise operations, chief financial officers (CFOs) are taking on a larger role in shaping AI strategy and helping to turn it into execution.
The study of 1,500 CFOs across 33 geographies and 26 industries found that 62% report their role has expanded into enterprise technology or AI strategy leadership. By 2030, more than half (56%) expect to have greater responsibility for designing financial and ethical guardrails for AI.
The study's foreword was written by IBM Chief Financial Officer James Kavanaugh, who noted that 'those responsibilities remain essential' but also emphasized the need for CFOs to shape AI strategy from the start. The study identified a group of AI-first CFOs whose organizations demonstrate advanced capabilities across enterprise strategy, AI governance, and integrated intelligence.
