CFOs Take Center Stage as AI Integration Gains Momentum
A recent IBM study on enterprise-wide AI adoption reveals that Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) are taking on increasingly prominent roles in shaping their company's technology and AI strategy.
The study, which surveyed 1,500 CFOs across 33 geographies and 26 industries, found that 62% of respondents reported having expanded into enterprise technology or AI strategy leadership. Furthermore, 56% of CFOs said they have gained greater portfolio-management and capital reallocation authority, while 54% have taken on more responsibility for business model or growth strategy design.
The study's findings also indicate that by 2030, over half of surveyed CFOs expect to be responsible for designing financial and ethical guardrails for AI. This includes shaping operating models, workforce strategies, and organizational structures, as well as driving enterprise value creation and portfolio strategy.
According to James Kavanaugh, IBM's Chief Financial Officer, 'Historically, the CFO was viewed as the guardian of stability, responsible for financial discipline and controllership of risk. Those responsibilities remain essential. But today, it's not enough for CFOs and their teams to simply evaluate decisions. They need to shape them from the start, connecting strategy to execution, insight to action, and technology to value creation.'
