Chevron Doubles Down on Venezuelan Oil Ambitions Amid Sanctions and Skepticism

US oil giant Chevron has confirmed it will expand its operations in Venezuela, despite concerns over the country's severely degraded energy infrastructure and ongoing international sanctions. The company plans to invest more than $7 billion over the next five years, with the goal of doubling production from approximately 300,000 barrels a day by 2026 to around 600,000 barrels per day.

Chevron has been operating in Venezuela since 1923 and currently holds joint ventures in the Orinoco Oil Belt. The company's CEO, Mike Wirth, stated that the expanded position reflects Chevron's confidence in Venezuela's deep resource potential and its ability to compete for investment within their portfolio for decades.

However, experts have expressed skepticism about the deal, citing the need for years of restoration work and tens of billions of dollars to resuscitate Venezuela's oil industry. Additionally, there are questions about whether Venezuelan acting president Delcy Rodríguez has the authority to grant Chevron 100-year rights over 17 oil fields with reserves of 65 billion barrels.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright defended the agreement, stating that it will 'increase the confidence for private businesses to come do deals in Venezuela, directly with the government of Venezuela.' But analysts remain cautious, warning that any future Venezuelan or American administration could overturn the deal.
