Chevron Expands Its Search for Oil in the Foz do Amazonas Basin
Chevron has begun its exploratory campaign in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, where it controls nine blocks in partnership with China's CNPC. The initial step involves a seismic survey to examine geological structures without drilling.
The survey will take place approximately 130 kilometers from Petrobras' Morpho well, which discovered hydrocarbons in August 2026. Chevron acquired its nine blocks in the auction held by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels in June 2025.
Chevron's global exploration vice president, Kevin McLachlan, stated that suppliers would begin the seismic survey on September 21, 2026. The process involves sending acoustic waves towards the ocean floor and capturing signals from sensors to create three-dimensional images of the subsurface.
