Chevron Promotes New Energies Chief to CFO in Leadership Shuffle
Chevron has announced a significant leadership reshuffle, naming Jeff Gustavson as its new chief financial officer. Gustavson, who previously led the company's New Energies unit, succeeds Eimear Bonner. Bonner, aged 52, will now oversee Chevron's oil, gas, and refining operations. The changes, announced on Monday, are part of a broader effort to strengthen the company's executive bench in anticipation of a potential CEO succession.
Gustavson, 54, brings a background in finance and strategy to his new role, with experience in investor relations, mergers and acquisitions, and business planning. Bonner, who has been CFO since March 2024, previously ran Chevron's Kazakhstan business and led its technology portfolio. The reshuffle is seen as a strategic move to prepare for the next CEO transition, with both Gustavson and Bonner considered potential internal successors to CEO Mike Wirth, who is 65 and has led the company for nearly a decade.
Other senior moves include Mark Nelson, 63, who will shift from running the oil and gas division to focus on strategy and business development while remaining vice chairman. Chevron's approach of rotating top executives through multiple roles aims to broaden their experience and test their readiness for larger responsibilities. For investors, this leadership depth can influence how consistently the company invests, executes, and returns cash, especially during a CEO handoff.
