Chevron Seeks to Nullify $744M Verdict in Coastal Damage Case
Chevron is seeking to nullify a $744.6 million verdict handed down by a Plaquemines Parish jury in a coastal damage case against the oil giant.
The company argued that the case belongs in federal court, citing a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that made it 'obvious' that these cases belong in federal court.
Chevron's attorney, Paul Clement, pointed to the Supreme Court decision, saying it applies to this case because some of the oil production and refining at issue was tied to federal contracts during World War II.
The state of Louisiana disagrees, arguing that Chevron waived its right to demand a federal trial by participating fully in the state case.
