Rugby player Jarome Luai will retain his status as the face of Pepsi in Papua New Guinea, despite joining the Chiefs and donning Coca-Cola's logo on field.

The Chiefs confirmed a sleeve sponsorship deal with Coke worth more than $5 million (AUD) over three seasons, but Luai still maintains an estimated $300,000 per year deal with Pepsi.

This crossover between branding is rare, given the intense rivalry between Pepsi and Coca-Cola.

'Situations happen where individual players have commercial relationships with one brand that can sit alongside the club's partnerships,' said Chiefs CEO Lorna McPherson.
