China's C919 Takes Flight Amid Doubts Over Global Ambitions

China's Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac) is preparing to make its first international flight with the Comac C919, a passenger jet that has been billed as the country's answer to Boeing and Airbus. The flight will take off from Beijing Capital International Airport at 3pm on Wednesday and land in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, just over two hours later.

The C919 is similar in size to the Boeing 737 and has been flying on domestic routes operated by Chinese airlines since 2023. However, analysts say it could take generations before a Chinese aircraft can meaningfully challenge the dominance of Boeing and Airbus in the global market.

China has long dreamed of building its own jet, with Li Jiaxiang, the head of China's civil aviation authority, saying in 2015 that 'a great nation must have its own large commercial aircraft.' However, progress has been slow due to the complexity and challenges of manufacturing large passenger jets.

The C919 relies heavily on foreign suppliers, with over half of its components sourced from overseas. This has led some experts to question whether Comac can truly be considered a Chinese company.
