Christodoulides Presses Chevron to Advance Aphrodite Gas Field Development
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides is urging Chevron to accelerate the development of the Aphrodite natural gas field, citing the need for decisive action to unlock Eastern Mediterranean energy resources.
The Aphrodite field, located in Block 12 of Cyprus's Exclusive Economic Zone, is estimated to hold approximately 5.6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and represents a critical component of Europe's strategy to diversify its energy supply chains away from Russian imports.
The commercialization model for the field hinges on a complex regional integration model, which involves tying subsea infrastructure to existing liquefaction facilities in Egypt rather than constructing a standalone floating liquefied natural gas platform.
President Christodoulides' public pressure reflects the government's frustration with the pace of progress, particularly as neighboring Israel has successfully brought its Leviathan and Karish fields online, integrating them into regional energy markets and establishing itself as a reliable exporter to Jordan and Egypt.
