Cisco Validates SONiC on N9000 Series for Reliable Open Networking
Cisco is addressing the challenges of open networking with its Cisco-validated SONiC on the Cisco N9000 Series Switches. While open networking offers strategic advantages like lower CapEx and avoiding vendor lock-in, a pure “do-it-yourself” model can introduce significant operational risks, including fragmented support and unpredictable debugging cycles. Cisco aims to combine the agility of open-source networking with the reliability and support of its proven hardware and software solutions.
The company highlights three major issues with DIY disaggregation: multi-vendor debugging complexity, feature maintenance fatigue, and hardware supply chain volatility. Cisco-validated SONiC on the N9000 Series mitigates these challenges by providing a precompiled, security-hardened binary, unified visibility through Cisco Nexus Dashboard, and single-point TAC resolution for faster issue resolution.
Cisco’s approach also includes support for multiple silicon options, such as Cisco Cloud Scale and NVIDIA Spectrum-X, allowing flexibility across traditional and high-density AI environments. This model ensures investment protection and operational flexibility, as the same hardware can run different software options like Cisco NX-OS, Cisco ACI, or Cisco-validated SONiC.
Currently available on the Cisco N9000 Series with Cisco Cloud Scale silicon for high-density 100G and 400G enterprise environments, and on the Cisco N9100 Series with NVIDIA Spectrum-X for AI backend fabrics, Cisco plans to extend this to Cisco Silicon One ASIC-powered N9000 Series for ultra-high-density fabrics. This integration is set to complete the SONiC integration across Cisco’s multi-silicon Nexus switching portfolio.
