Ciscomani and Mendoza Clash Over Healthcare Funding in Arizona Congressional Race

A contentious Congressional District 6 race is centered on healthcare policies, with Republican U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani and Democratic challenger JoAnna Mendoza at odds over Medicaid funding.

Ciscomani supports the One Big Beautiful Bill, a budget plan signed into law by President Donald Trump in July 2025, which aims to root out fraud and abuse in Medicaid. He claims this will protect Medicaid and strengthen the safety net for those who need it most.

Mendoza counters that Ciscomani's support of the bill is misguided, as it creates bureaucratic red tape designed to push hundreds of thousands of low-income Arizonans off the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), the state's version of Medicaid. This would result in fewer dollars for hospitals and clinics, particularly those in rural areas.

A Congressional Budget Office analysis estimated that the bill would cut projected spending on Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program by over a trillion dollars, leading to an additional 11.8 million Americans going without health insurance. Healthcare administrators are sounding alarm bells about overcrowded emergency rooms and bad health outcomes.
