Cloud Leaders: Microsoft and Alphabet Pull Away from Rivals
Microsoft and Alphabet have solidified their positions as leaders in the cloud computing market, dwarfing their competitors with impressive growth rates. Microsoft's Intelligent Cloud segment posted $39.31 billion in revenue, up 32%, while Azure grew 43% and reached an annual revenue of over $100 billion for the first time.
Alphabet's Google Cloud accelerated to 82% growth on $24.77 billion, with nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies using Gemini Enterprise and 950 million monthly active users in the Gemini App.
The real difference between the two companies lies in their capex expenditures and financing strategies. Microsoft spent $35.80 billion on capex in Q4 while generating $19.64 billion of free cash flow, whereas Alphabet spent $44.92 billion and slipped to negative $5.86 billion FCF.
Sundar Pichai noted that Google Cloud's operating income needs to catch up to its top-line pace, while ad revenue must continue to absorb a significant interest expense increase.
