Coca-Cola HBC Clears Regulatory Hurdle for African Expansion
Coca-Cola HBC (LSE:CCH) has cleared a major regulatory hurdle after South Africa's Competition Tribunal approved its acquisition of a controlling stake in Coca-Cola Beverages Africa. The deal, which is subject to conditions, will see the combined business handle most of Coca-Cola system volumes across Africa.
The ruling brings Coca-Cola HBC closer to completing the largest transaction in its history, with the company planning a secondary listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange alongside the acquisition.
Coca-Cola HBC's African expansion plans come as The Coca-Cola Company invests heavily in bottling capacity on the continent. The move supports the long-term case for volume growth in markets with young, fast-growing populations.
The deal will transform Coca-Cola HBC from a bottler focused mainly on Europe and Nigeria into one of the most important consumer staples businesses operating in Africa, diversifying its exposure away from mature Western European markets.
