Code for i Surpasses RDi in Usage, Continues to Grow in Popularity
The Code for i project has continued to grow in popularity over the past year. Since its creation by Liam Allan in 2021, the VS Code plug-in has exploded in usage, with nearly 93,000 installs recorded on the Microsoft Marketplace homepage.
In comparison, IBM's Rational Developer for i (RDi) saw a significant decline in usage, according to Fortra's 2026 IBM i Marketplace study. This milestone marks a major shift in favor of Code for i among developers working with IBM i systems.
The project has also seen significant updates and new features. The most recent release, version 3.0.13, brings support for Mapepire, which should speed up database connections, as well as the new multi-factor authentication (MFA) capability that IBM launched with IBM i 7.6.
