COMAC's C919 Takes Flight: Can China's Jet Challenge Boeing and Airbus?
China's Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) has made a significant step in its bid to challenge Boeing and Airbus, the world's two biggest plane makers. The state-owned company's C919 jet took off on its first international commercial flight from Beijing Capital International Airport to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The flight, operated by Air China, marked a major milestone for COMAC's plan to establish itself as a direct competitor in the global aviation market. However, despite this progress, the C919 still relies heavily on foreign components and has not yet secured certification from major aviation regulators in Europe or the US.
COMAC had initially aimed to have its jets entirely made in China by 2025 and to capture 10% of the country's domestic market. However, those goals have since passed, and the company is still working to strengthen its supply chain and increase production.
