Constellation Energy Powers Up Amazon Deal for Calvert Cliffs Expansion
Constellation Energy has secured a significant agreement with Amazon to supply power from its Calvert Cliffs plant in Maryland. Under this 20-year deal, Constellation will provide about 190 megawatts of new nuclear capacity to support Amazon's operations. This addition is part of the larger expansion plans at the Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center, which includes a total of 690 megawatts of power.
The project is expected to create more than $3 billion in infrastructure investments across the plant over its lifespan. The agreement also secures revenue for Constellation through relicensing the facility for another 20 years. This deal comes on top of a recent acquisition by Constellation, where it purchased RISEC Holdings, owner of the Rhode Island State Energy Center, from a Shell subsidiary for $715 million.
The impact of this agreement is substantial, not just for Amazon but also for the local community and the environment. The increased capacity at Calvert Cliffs will reduce reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to Maryland's clean energy goals. As the world shifts towards renewable sources, partnerships like this between major corporations and power providers are crucial in driving forward sustainable development.
