Copilot 2.0: Microsoft's AI Assistant Gets Major Overhaul

Microsoft is revamping its AI assistant Copilot to enable users to hand off complex tasks and build tools by describing what they need. The new experience has three main components: Home, Code, and Autopilot.

The 'Home' section combines Chat and Cowork, allowing users to quickly find answers or delegate work such as preparing a briefing or responding to a request for proposals. Copilot will eventually route requests to Chat, Cowork, or Code on its own.

Office in Copilot allows users to create Word documents, Excel workbooks, or PowerPoint decks without leaving the experience. The files remain editable in regular Office apps and can be worked on simultaneously by colleagues. This integration streamlines tasks such as building presentations that draw on workbooks and refining both files from within Copilot.

Code is designed for users who require a tool but may not open a development environment. They can describe a tracker, dashboard, app, or workflow in plain language and have Copilot build it using the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot. A separate Copilot Managed Runtime lets organizations host and share resulting apps within Microsoft 365.
