Copilot+ PC Brand Abandoned Amid Security Concerns and Lack of Consumer Appeal

Microsoft and Qualcomm's 'Copilot+ PCs' brand has been quietly shelved, following a rocky launch in 2024. The initiative aimed to bring AI-first computing to mainstream devices, but its flagship feature, Recall, was met with security concerns, leading to delays and tarnishing the brand.

The Copilot+ PC moniker was initially used for high-end Windows hardware that met specific system requirements, including a minimum 45 TOPS NPU. However, OEMs began dropping the branding from marketing materials and product names over the past two years, with Microsoft itself seemingly abandoning it in 2026.

In an interview, Surface CVP Brett Ostrum confirmed that recent Surface PCs do not carry the Copilot+ PC label, but still meet the requirements for AI-powered experiences. Qualcomm's Kedar Kondap also noted that the purpose of Copilot+ PCs was to deliver NPU experiences, and that OEMs are now offering these experiences without using the branding.

The demise of the Copilot+ PC brand may be attributed to the rough launch and Microsoft's own Copilot AI tool not having a strong reputation. The lack of marketing efforts around the branding suggests that it has failed to resonate with consumers, despite its intended goal of promoting AI-first computing.
