Cuba Compared to Bankrupt Company: External Control Proposed Amid Economic Crisis

Cuban economist Orlando Plá Tomás has sparked debate by comparing Cuba's economic situation to that of a bankrupt company. In an interview, he proposed that those who provide resources should take control, as happens in corporate mergers.

He used the example of American Express acquiring a struggling company, where they would take over and make decisions about which executives to keep or let go. Plá suggested a similar scenario for Cuba, where external economic control could be imposed without formal political annexation.

This idea has been met with skepticism by some, including economist Pedro Monreal, who described the current package of economic measures as a 'deformed hybrid' that fails to address key issues.
