Deadly Caterpillars on the Loose: A Guide to World's Most Venomous Species
Some of the most venomous caterpillars in the world have been identified by researchers. Among them is the Lonomia obliqua, also known as the fire taturana or giant silkworm, found in southern Brazil and neighboring parts of South America.
This caterpillar's venom contains compounds that interfere with the body's blood-clotting system, causing widespread bleeding, kidney damage, and even death. A specific antivenom is available in Brazil, highlighting the severity of envenomation by this species.
Another member of the Lonomia genus, Lomonia achelous, or the Brazilian caterpillar, has been associated with severe haemorrhagic syndromes following contact with its venomous spines. Its habit of gathering in groups on tree trunks increases the risk of accidental encounters.
