Designers Reveal How to Turn Basements into Inviting Spaces

Basements are often overlooked, but they can be transformed into inviting spaces with the right design approach. According to designers Sasha Basso and David Quarles IV, basements offer endless possibilities for creative expression.

Both designers agree that embracing the lack of natural light in a basement is key to creating a cozy atmosphere. Basso suggests 'color drenching' a space by painting the ceiling, trim, and walls with the same shade, which can create a sense of infinite space.

The designers recommend five designer-approved paint colors for basements: Brinjal (Farrow and Ball), Setting Plaster (Farrow and Ball), Ritual (Color Atelier), Surf Camp (Backdrop), and Iron Ore (Sherwin-Williams). Each color offers a unique aesthetic, from luxurious to soothing.

Basso emphasizes that basements can be used as secondary living rooms, guest quarters, or even speakeasies. With the right design approach, a basement can become an inviting space where family and friends gather.
