Dimon Backs Warsh's Fed Overhaul Amid Wall Street Criticism
Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, is backing Kevin Warsh's new approach to communication at the Federal Reserve. Warsh has pulled back from forward guidance, which indicates the path of rates and gives investors confidence that the Fed is taking its mandate seriously.
Dimon thinks the world of Warsh and believes his approach makes 'tremendous sense.' He argues that the Fed is doing what it needs to fight inflation, which hasn't been below 2% since February 2021. Dimon also supports Warsh's task forces, which are examining communication, data quality, the balance sheet, new productivity drivers like AI, and revisiting inflation frameworks.
Some analysts have criticized Warsh's approach, saying it diminishes transparency and dismantles policy progress. However, Torsten Sløk of Apollo Global Management has been firm in his support of Warsh, calling him 'unfairly criticized' and arguing that reducing forward guidance restores real market signals.
Jeremy Siegel, emeritus professor of finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, agrees with Sløk but notes that the Fed could reduce volatility by providing clearer framework guidance.
